Progress Report: Update August 2

The stairwell is transformed! The small locker doors are varnished and will be installed at a later date. Everything has been coated with 2 layers of Kilz primer. We will not be painting this area until after the wood shop is built. We will be having to carry a lot of wood, supplies and tools through here and do not want to risk scraping the final paint job.

Eric and Mary are now back in Florida and hope to return to the boat soon. DJ is remaining with the boat and will continue with the electrical system and other jobs.

This was the entrance to the stairwell when we first began working on the boat in March. It was known as 'The Black Hole' and had a powerful smoke smell from the fire damage.

What a difference!

Under the bunk in the captains' cabin has been cleaned and is ready for Kilz primer. The walls still need to be cleaned and scraped, 'cubby' lockers built in, a bench seat added under the window and a few more modifications in the head.

The cleaning under the counter and the floor have been finished in the bathroom up forward. Ready for kilz and paint. The flooring is granite tile. The two photos below show the bathroom and head before we started working on the boat in March. Incredible difference!

DJ's new electrical panel in the lower helm.
All ready to begin wire connections.

2 A/C units that were in the engine room. They have been removed and sold for funds toward supplies.
DJ pulled the fridge away from the wall in the galley and pulled up more flooring to get to the wiring and plumbing. A lot of this will be removed and simplified. There is a lot of heavy copper tubing under the flooring that will be recycled and the funds used for supplies.

Progress Report: July 25th

This is the head in the forward area down below, just aft of where the fire started. It was really nasty with black soot and heavy smoke damage. The walls have been scraped and cleaned, ready now for paint prep and Kilz primer. The counter was a dingy green but with a lot of elbow grease, scotch bright pads and GOJO, a beautiful powder blue counter has emerged! We thought the faucet was past saving but both it and the sink cleaned up really nice. These also were done with GOJO.
The shower door and stall took about 7 hours. The stall has some staining on the walls and will be painted in future. The toilet was really black but the bowl came out almost pristine. The seat and lid will also be painted in the future.
Under the counter has been scraped and vacuumed. It, along with two wall lockers have yet to be cleaned. The floor will be cleaned last. The goal is to finish cleaning this bathroom before our work trip is over.
The stairwell has a coat of Kilz primer and the top area will be covered with a sheet of door skin. The holes previously had lights in them but we will be covering these up. There is a lip just under the ledge of the locker where a light will be installed at a later date.

We have 3 working days left and will be heading back to Florida on the 30th.

Progress Report: July 19th

A lot of projects accomplished this week. These are the two cabinet doors from the stairwell. This is how blackened everything was from the stairwell on forward when we first started working on the boat back in the end of February.

 They cleaned up beautifully!
I used full strength Pine Sol, Scotch Bright pads and Magic Eraser.
Eric will varnish them this week.

Here is the stairwell before prepping. The lower area is covered in wall paper glue residue. It is being removed by brushing on full strength GOJO (orange pumice hand cleaner) and then scraped off with a small cabinet scraper. The upper areas will be scraped and then sanded.

The whiter area shows the effectiveness of the GOJO cleaner and scraper.

These a/c vents were over the microwave in the galley and one of the larger side cabinets across from the fridge. The insides were a bit blackened but they cleaned up well.

We removed the microwave. It was the only appliance that couldn't be salvaged. This area has been prepped for paint.

On the opposite side of the wall, to the right of the microwave and stove, this locker held a very large a/c unit. The unit has been removed and a smaller one will be installed on the bottom that will cool the galley and part of the main salon. The top will become storage space. Most of the wiring, plumbing and various electrical boxes will be removed.

This small fan will take the place of the damaged galley fan. The galley gets very hot and this is really helping to vent the air through ducting in the overhead to the outside. Temporary but works great!

The three large cabinets are finished with varnished doors completed on two of them. All the shelves are in and smoke smell is completely gone from these areas.

The first top galley cupboards are finished inside and out!

The smoke smell in this second set of galley cupboards was so strong it was nauseating.

Painting is completed and smoke smell is gone! Eric is finishing up the inner shelves and outer varnishing of the doors and frame.

This is the laundry room. You can see the difference on the walls after using the GOJO and scraper.
This closet in the laundry room was as black as the small doors in the first photo. Here it has been cleaned and prepped for Kilz primer.

The entire room is now painted with Kilz primer as well as the section of wood flooring where the washer and dryer will sit. We will be moving on to other projects right now. We need to use the remaining 9-10 days of our work trip to prep for the kilz primer and get as much of the smoke smell eliminated as we can. Painting will come at a later date.

The laundry room when we first started.

DJ pressure washed and cleaned up these two a/c units.

Demolition continues in the captains' quarters.

During the fire, several windows were broken out by the fire department. Plastic sheets were taped over the window frames for quite awhile before the windows were replaced. There was a residue left that came off easily using Magic Eraser and diluted dish soap.

Mary has been cleaning sections of the outside of the boat for a couple hours each morning.

DJ's work bench in the main salon. The forward distribution panel is coming along nicely. Each person is working on several projects throughout the day and we are seeing much progress.
